Our Story

Twisted Loom is mostly me, Charlotte Cochrane, designing and making in Manchester, the once textile capital of England.

Initially working as an upholsterer, my upholstery haven soon evolved into a handcrafted haven, designing and making furniture and homewares that pop with colour and a twist of Mid-Century Modern style.

The move to designing and making original pieces came from the fact that I was sick of seeing cheaply made furniture destined for the dump and I wanted to offer an antidote to this. A bit like the Arts & Crafts Movement, I wanted to create pieces with soul, handcrafted with meticulous care, not churned out on factory lines.

A few years back I met an award-winning gin maker who foraged all his botanicals locally from Lancashire and Cumbria. Looking on your doorstep seemed like a great idea and I wondered if I could do the same. Could I ‘forage’ all my materials and skills locally? I set about finding everything I needed within a 50-mile radius of Manchester.

I wanted to harness local talent and premium British materials to create beautiful products that would last. This, my “super-local” mission took shape, fueled by a desire for sustainability and mindful consumption.

My cornerstone: Thoughtful furniture, not fast furniture. Luscious wools from Yorkshire’s oldest mills, salvaged wood and hand-turned legs and lamps by our Wood Man extraordinaire, Phil. Everything is made with care and a focus on function and utility. Simply put, I want my products to be well-made and useful.

My Style: I like things bright and bold with a contemporary simplicity. Come and dive into my world of punchy bold colours, soft textures and limited edition designs.
